Davenport cross county ranked 6th in preseason coaches poll

Gorillas finish sixth at Asotin invitational

DAVENPORT—The hometown Gorilla cross country runners received some recognition from coaches statewide, earning 6th in the preseason Washington State Cross Country Coaches Poll for boys 1B/2B. Davenport is one of three District 7 schools in the top 10.

Colfax was ranked fourth, while Asotin was ranked fifth.

Rounding out the boys 1B/2B top 10 was Liberty Bell, Ilwaco, Life Christian Academy, Morton-White Pass, Cedar Tree Classical Christian, Northwest Christian (Lacey) and Pope John Paul II. Manson, Brewster and Valley Christian also received votes from coaches.

Kettle Falls, St. George’s and Colfax made the girls 1B/2B top 10 as District 7 representatives.

The Gorillas, which is an all-boys team this year, last competed in the Asotin XC invitational Saturday, Sept. 18 and finished sixth in the boy’s 5,000 meters (and third amongst District 7 schools) despite being down two runners with 148 points.

Sophomore Jaeger Jacobsen earned his second straight top-three finish, finishing third with a time of 16:30.

Davenport trailed Lewiston (Idaho), Logos (Moscow, Idaho), College Place, Asotin and St. George’s in total team points at the invitational while beating Valley Christian, Freeman, Colfax and Troy (Idaho).

All eight runners earned a personal record, according to head coach Brian Telford.

Davenport’s first of three league meets is Tuesday, Sept. 28 at Republic in Ferry County.
