Reardan routs Kettle Falls for first league win

REARDAN-The first NE2B win of the 2021 season was a long time coming for the Reardan football team. Friday, it turned out a visit by the Kettle Falls Bulldogs was the perfect recipe to get Reardan back on the winning track. The home team easily dusted off Kettle Falls 42-14 Oct. 1.

Reardan improved to 1-3 in league play and 2-3 overall with the victory, while Kettle Falls fell to 0-3 in a battle of the two teams at the bottom of the league going into the game.

"We're finally back to every kid, especially the seniors, are eligible and healthy," Reardan head coach Eric Nikkola said. "We're healthy again and going into next week in really good shape. It's a bright future here."

Senior running back Abe Nelson got the scoring started for Reardan, taking a handoff 45 yards for a touchdown on the game's opening drive. Fellow senior running back Cody Sprecher added a nine-yard score in the frame.

Kettle Falls cut the deficit on its next drive, when senior quarterback Gunner Graves completed a pass to sophomore wide receiver Zane Johnson. Johnson looked to be stopped just short of the goal line, but the referees ruled the play a touchdown. After a failed conversion, Reardan led 14-6.

Reardan got a one-yard score from Nelson to take a 21-6 lead into halftime.

In the second half, Reardan scored 21 straight points. Sophomore quarterback Tate Nelson ran untouched on a quarterback sneak for a one-yard score, then found junior running back Jaquin Stroble for a 17-yard passing touchdown.

Head coach Eric Nikkola put in a mostly J.V. squad for the fourth-quarter, and sophomore backup quarterback Noah Shintaffer-Hamilton found freshman Rysen Soliday for a seven-yard touchdown to make it 42-6 Reardan.

Graves ran in a 14-yard touchdown with under a minute left for the final score.

Sprecher and Abe Nelson headed up the ground game for Reardan. The former ran 13 times for 128 yards and a touchdown, while Abe Nelson ran 16 times for 111 yards and two touchdowns.

Sprecher and sophomore linebacker Aidan Chilson tied for the team lead in tackles with 4.5 each.

Sophomore wide receiver Adam Harrington caught four passes for 69 yards to lead Kettle Falls.

The schedule ramps up for Reardan now, with a trip to Chewelah on deck. That game is schedule for Friday, Oct. 8 at 7 p.m.
