HARRINGTON – The Harrington Opera House Society met Monday, Oct. 4, with President Ellen Evans at the helm. Also present were Mark and Sheryl Stedman, Gordon and Billy Herron, Ed and Bunny Haugan, Becky Moeller, Linda Wagner and Karen Robertson.
Financial reporting noted that year-to-date rummage donations amount to more than $8,000 to be used for various building projects.
Jill Barth requests the use of the opera house on May 21 and 22, 2022 for a quilt show being held during the annual car show. The vote is 10-0 in favor of this request.
The group discussed the rummage-room door leading to the basement, which led in turn to debating the hiring of a structural engineer to assess the current status of the building’s exterior. Stedman volunteered to do more research into getting consultations to address the group’s concerns.
Due to the ongoing Covid pandemic, piano lessons in the opera house are still on hold, and Harrington school music teacher Robert Viershilling's guitar-quartet event has been cancelled. The potential provision of quilting lessons in the opera house is also on hold.
The group approved a request to store Paul Gilliland's scaffolding in the opera house basement. A Society member reported that the flickering stage lights have been fixed. Wagner received correspondence regarding a bank safe that had once been installed in the Bank Block building. Robertson reported that the fire extinguishers have been serviced, and she also has a sketch of the locations of the extinguishers for ease in locating them. No decision was made regarding Halloween candy for this year.
The next meeting is scheduled for Monday, Nov. 1, at 7 p.m. in the opera house.
