Gorillas clinch home district game

Davenport glides past Chewelah to ensure top-two finish

DAVENPORT-The Gorillas will be hosting a district crossover game with an opportunity to go to the state playoffs this year. That was ensured after Davenport eviscerated the Chewelah Cougars 42-18 on Senior Night Friday, Oct. 22 to clinch a top-two finish in the NE2B.

Davenport improved to 6-1 with the win and 7-1 overall, remaining in second place in the league behind undefeated Lind-Ritzville/Sprague. The loss was damaging for Chewelah, which fell to 3-3 in the league and 3-5 overall while slipping to sixth place in the league.

The top four league teams will play a crossover game with District 6 for a playoff berth, while the top two league teams (now assured to be LRS and Davenport) will host one of those games.

Senior running back Marcus Delafield opened the game by carrying the ball four times for 50 yards and a touchdown on the first possession. Junior fullback Sam Schneider extended the Gorillas' lead in the second quarter with a 12-yard score and a six-yard score to make it 21-0.

Chewelah got on the board when junior Clayton Jeanneret returned the ensuing kickoff 65 yards for a touchdown, but Davenport junior running back Jayvee Fudurich broke a 47-yard run on the next drive to make it 28-6.

Delafield scored twice in the second half for his second and third scores of the game, while Chewelah managed two touchdowns for the final score.

Davenport's leading rusher, Delafield, finished with 178 yards and three touchdowns on 24 carries. He also caught three passes from junior quarterback Evan Gunning for 79 yards through the air.

Schneider added 63 yards and two touchdowns on seven rushes, while junior wingback Brenick Soliday had 59 yards on six attempts. Fudurich had 85 yards and a score on the ground.

As a team, Davenport ran for 396 yards, continuing its dominant rushing performance this season.

Davenport now looks to its rivalry game at Reardan Friday, Oct. 29 to close the regular season. Then, it's on to a district crossover home game the following weekend against a District 6 opponent.

"We're going to continue to roll with what's been working for us and what got us to this point," Davenport head coach Justin Young said.

Davenport and Reardan kickoff from Joe Johnson Field at 7 p.m. Friday night.
