Council approves four business items

DAVENPORT—City council approved four new business items and held a public hearing for the 2022 budget at its Oct. 27 regular meeting, where no comments were made.

The first approved resolution allowed mayor Brad Sweet to assist Century West Engineering to conduct a pedestrian safety evaluation and analysis on Highway 2 through the city, where speeding and pedestrian crossings have been an oft-discussed and complained topic in the city.

Council also approved $2,000 to the chamber of commerce for tourism and $2,500 in American Rescue Plan Act funds to the Celebrate Davenport committee, which puts on Pioneer Days every summer.

City staff brought council a request to repeal an ordinance and amend the 2021 budget to cover ARPA funds that the city received totaling $243,417, which council approved into the current expense fund.

Finally, council approved a conditional use permit for Andy and Janie Schreck to build a personal storage shed on their Monroe Street residence.

Prior to the regular meeting, the water/sewer/garbage committee meeting met with maintenance superintendent Fred Bell, who told the committee they need to meet with Matt Schneider to discuss farming of the sewer lagoons north of the baseball fields on the northeast side of town. The city has an agreement with Schneider, who farms the city-owned land for a 1/3-2/3 crop share.

Council also held a budget workshop prior to the public hearing for the 2022 budget, which is currently proposed at $5,946,900 in revenues and $5,109,905 in expenditures for an $836,995 net gain.

The next council meeting is Nov. 10 in City Hall.
