Davenport beats Lake Roosevelt to clinch state berth

Gorillas to learn their opponent Sunday morning after sloppy victory

DAVENPORT--It certainly wasn't pretty, but the Gorillas got the job done and are on to state. Davenport knocked off the Lake Roosevelt Raiders in a District 6/7 2B crossover game 24-13 to clinch a state 2B playoff berth and keep its season alive Friday, Nov. 5.

Davenport scored on its opening drive with a one-yard touchdown run by junior wingback Brenick Soliday that was set up by a 39-yard run by junior fullback Sam Schneider. It wouldn't be Schneider's last big play.

Lake Roosevelt responded on its opening possession, marching right down the field and tying the game on a two-yard scoring run by quarterback Brit Egbert. Davenport punched back, with senior running back Marcus Delafield scoring on an eight-yard pitch play on a drive that was set up by another long Schneider run-this of the 28-yard variety.

Davenport would extend its lead to 21-7 after junior quarterback Evan Gunning found senior tight end Jarrett Jacobsen wide open off play action for a 46-yard score.

On the next drive, Schneider picked off Egbert, but Davenport couldn't capitalize due to three straight poor snaps.

The score would remain 21-7 into halftime and through the third quarter.

Lake Roosevelt drew closer on a 28-yard touchdown pass from Egbert to Chase Marchand. After the extra point was blocked, Davenport led just 21-13.

Davenport then took five minutes off the clock on a drive that included another long Schneider run and ended in a 24-yard field goal by Soliday. The Gorillas then got interceptions by Delafield and Gunning on back-to-back Lake Roosevelt drives to seal the game.

The game was a sloppy affair mired by 26 combined penalties, sloppy snapping and chippy play, but the Gorillas were victorious and clinched their spot in the 12-team 2B state playoffs.

Davenport will learn its playoff seeding and first-round opponent Sunday morning.
