Young named Seahawks Coach of the Week

Davenport coach won honor for Week 8, will attend Seahawks game

DAVENPORT—Gorilla football head coach Justin Young was informed last week that he was named the Seattle Seahawks High School Coach of the Week for Week 8 amongst statewide 1B, 2B, 1A and 2A schools.

Davenport throttled Chewelah 42-18 in Week 8 to clinch a top-two seed in the NE2B standings and a home District 6 crossover game to advance to the state playoffs, in which the Gorillas topped Lake Roosevelt to secure their playoff spot. Young led Davenport to a 9-2 season overall.

Young, a self-proclaimed Seahawks fan, won $500 for the football program and a framed certificate signed by Seahawks head coach Pete Carroll for the recognition. He was also invited to attend Seattle’s Dec. 26 game against the Chicago Bears.

The Seahawks give the award to one coach from the 1B, 2B, 1A or 2A levels and one coach from the 3A or 4A level each week.

Davenport’s head man was one of five Eastern Washington head coaches from the 1B, 2B, 1A or 2A levels to win Seahawks Coach of the Week this season.

Lind-Ritzville/Sprague head coach Greg Whitmore won the award after the Broncos beat Liberty 18-7 in Week 1,while Almira-Coulee-Hartline head coach Brandon Walsh won the honor in Week 6 after his Warriors knocked off Odessa to snap the Tigers’ 37-game winning streak.

Kyle Kimble of Pomeroy, Buddy Wood of Riverside and Devin Bauer of Lakeside also won the award this season.

The Times staff hopes Young doesn’t tell Carroll too much about the Gorillas’ practically run-play-exclusive offensive style due to concerns that Carroll would adopt the same style and never let Russell Wilson throw the ball again.
