Commissioners wait to approve budget

Meeting recessed to Dec. 28 for final approval

DAVENPORT – The Lincoln County Commissioners tabled a motion to adopt the final 2022 budget until next week after Christmas at their Dec. 20 meeting, saying that budget isn’t ready for approval yet.

“A lot of items are still in flux,” commissioner Scott Hutsell said at the meeting. “But we’re 95% done.”

Hutsell said some insurance items and budgeting with the Washington State University Extension have yet to be completed.

The meeting was recessed to Dec. 28 for final budget approval, which must be completed by Dec. 31.

The commissioners are faced with a budget gap that appears yearly due to an imbalance of expenses and revenues that often plague small, rural counties. This year’s gap is around $1.3 million, which the commissioners typically balance with cash reserves.

Proposed budgets have shown a current expense fund nearly $9.6 million with a projected, rough number of $8.26 million in revenues.

The commissioners did approve the auditor’s redistricting plan for the county’s commissioner districts. The only change from 2010 is moving West Larene from District No. 3, which is Rob Coffman’s district, to District No. 2, which is Hutsell’s district.

West Larene has 100 residents, per 2020 census data.
