Girls get convincing dub while boys hold on for victory
REARDAN-For the second time in two weeks, both the girls and boys Reardan varsity basketball games were victorious over the Chewelah Cougars. The girls won their game handily 55-28, while the boys held on for a 68-61 win Tuesday, Jan. 4.
The wins came 13 days after both teams beat Chewelah on the road Dec. 22.
The girls came out guns blazing, using tough defense to take a 17-0 lead after one quarter. Chewelah fought tougher in the second quarter, but Reardan still led 30-10 at halftime.
Reardan then outscored Chewelah 15-6 in the third quarter to take a 45-16 lead. Chewelah won the final frame 12-10 to make the margin "just" 27 points.
Seniors Ayden Krupke and Madalyn Dewey scored 18 and 13 points apiece to guide Reardan to its seventh straight victory.
The boys game was tighter, as Chewelah took a 13-12 lead after a quarter and a slim 25-22 lead into halftime. Reardan made its run in the third quarter, outscoring the Cougars 30-17 to take a 52-42 lead into the final quarter. Chewelah cut the deficit down, but Reardan still managed to take a seven-point victory.
Senior Cody Sprecher led Reardan with 22 points, while Kruz Katzer and Gabe Colt each scored 13 points for Chewelah.
Reardan improved above a .500 record to 6-5 with the victory, its fourth in a row.
Both squads will look to continue their winning streaks with home games against Northwest Christian (Colbert) beginning at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 7.
