Massie to retire after current school year
HARRINGTON—The search for a new superintendent at the school district here is on after Wayne Massie announced he’ll be retiring at the end of the school year.
Massie has been with the district on a part-time basis for four years while commuting to Harrington from Spokane Valley. He first retired from a full-time educational career seven years ago and has been working part-time since, but this time, he said he’s hanging up his educational cleats for good.
“I’ve just had enough of everything to do with the job, like all the meetings and whatnot,” Massie said. “I’m old enough to not need or want to do this.”
Massie will conclude a 42-year educational career that also includes 16 years as a full-time superintendent, 15 years as a principal and 11 years as a teacher.
“The people have been great here,” Massie said. “We got a few things done that needed to be done, like a new roof and HVAC through a state grant.”
A school board that has three new members in its ranks, including Shelley Quigley, Justin Slack and Jon Evans, began discussing its first major undertaking of 2022 at a special meeting Tuesday, Jan. 11. That task is finding Massie’s replacement.
“We had a conversation about the job description and what the process will be like, since we have three new members,” board member Darren Mattozzi said. “We’ll contact ESD…and they’ll give us some candidates that could be rural.”
ESD will present candidates to the board and district, which will kick off the process of finding a new superintendent, Mattozzi said.
The new candidate will be working part-time, like Massie did.
“The schedule can vary,” Mattozzi said. “Sometimes the super comes in four days a week, sometimes two, depending on the need.”
A timeline for selecting a new candidate isn’t set in stone, Mattozzi said. Usually, candidates have done round-robin interviews with school administration and the board before a finalist is chosen. Tuesday’s meeting started discussions that will likely last several months before Massie’s retirement in June.
