Boys lose at buzzer while girls get routed
COULEE CITY—It wasn’t a winning Tuesday for the Davenport boys and girls basketball teams, as both lost to the Almira-Coulee-Hartline Warriors Tuesday, Jan. 11. It was just the second loss of the season for the boys, while the girls have lost six straight games.
The boys loss came in heartbreaking fashion, as ACH’s Grady Murray tipped in a missed shot at the buzzer to give the Warriors a 60-59 victory. Davenport was outscored 21-11 in the final quarter after entering the last eight minutes with a 48-39 lead.
The Gorillas fell to 10-2 with the loss and had an eight-game winning streak snapped.
Tennessee Rainwater had 19 points and Brenick Soliday had 15 points for Davenport, while ACH’s Reece Isaak dominated with 32 points and 16 rebounds.
Davenport was coming off a dominating 68-32 victory over Liberty Bell in which Rainwater scored 26 points and Soliday and Jake Coffman added 11 points each.
The girls, playing in their first game in a week after contests against Kettle Falls and Liberty Bell were cancelled (weather causing the prior and COVID-19 amongst LB causing the latter), couldn’t muster enough offense to keep up with the Warriors in a 56-38 loss.
Davenport was outscored 16-5 in the first quarter and 17-8 in the third quarter before outscoring the Warriors 17-13 in the final quarter.
Eighth-grader Glenna Soliday led the Gorillas with 15 points, but Mimi Isaak countered with 30 points for ACH as the Warriors earned victory.
The Gorillas’ next contest against Lind-Ritzville/Sprague was rescheduled for Feb. 5 due to COVID-19 issues with both programs.
Davenport is next scheduled to take on struggling Chewelah Tuesday, Jan. 18 before a big matchup with Colfax Saturday, Jan. 22.
