Harrington school levy passes comfortably

A two-year replacement levy seeking funds from taxpayers in the Harrington School District had passed by a wide margin as of press time. A special election was held Tuesday, Feb. 8 for voters to decide on the levy, which had received 131 “yes” votes and 57 “no” votes with just 14 ballots left to count by press time.

The district will collect funds in 2023 and 2024 totaling $375,000 per year, which carries an estimated rate of $2.25 per $1,000 in assessed property value. That’s a decrease from the current rate of $2.50 per $1,000 in assessed property value.

Among other things, the levy helps fund clubs, athletics, extracurriculars and some administrative salaries within the district.

Voters inside city limits voted in favor of the levy 63-29, and rural Harrington was in favor 29-4. Bluestem voters were opposed 4-1, but voters in Downs, Earl and Mohler tended to support the levy.

All other levies on the county ballot passed in the special election, which had a 40.28% voter turnout.
