Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!
Young Gorillas expected to return all but one player
SPOKANE VALLEY-The seventh-seeded Davenport girls' basketball team saw its season come to an end after two games at the District 7 2B Tournament at West Valley High School. The Gorillas fell to the St. George's Dragons 62-46 in a loser-out game Saturday, Feb. 12.
Davenport played the fourth-seeded and favored Dragons closely in the first quarter, with the score tied 11-11 after eight minutes. St. George's then built a 32-24 lead by halftime before building a 22-point advantage in the third quarter it wouldn't relinquish.
"Our defense was just not lasting 30 seconds," Davenport head coach Stacia Soliday said. "We would play good defense for 10 to 15 seconds, then get a little distracted or think we can take a few seconds off when our man gets the ball, so we just had too many times where we were not continuing to play hard defense."
The Gorillas were without starting center Clare Lathrop, who was nursing a foot injury.
Davenport was led by junior Lena Waters, who scored 17 points and snared 11 rebounds. Jensyn Jacobsen added nine points and eight rebounds, while Glenna Soliday scored eight points.
"We just aren't running through (offense) fast enough," Stacia Soliday said. "We still haven't really accepted how fast the pace needs to be."
The Gorillas shot 36% from the field to 42% for St. George's and connected on four three-pointers to the Dragons' seven. Davenport was able to outrebound its opponent 32-25 and secure six steals to none for St. George's. However, Davenport committed 19 turnovers to just seven for the Dragons.
Davenport's lone senior is Hanna Orvis, and key players Lathrop and Soliday played hefty minutes as eighth-graders. Most of the roster figures to return for next season.
"I told them just now that we need to spend a lot of time shooting outside of the season and make up some time for COVID, besides the fact that we're young," Stacia Soliday said. "I think we have a lot of potential."
