ODESSA – The Crab Creek Alliance hosted its grand opening March 25-26 at its newly purchased location at 17 W. First Ave.
Housed in the former Ott/Haase Insurance location, the Alliance is a non-profit organization established by several local residents to build community spirit, fosteri inclusivity, and celebrate the history of the town and promote its future.
The group has applied for tax exempt 501(c)(3) status.
The building's front office space has been furnished with a conference table and chairs for use as a meeting place for small to medium-sized groups.
The Alliance's current board members are President Bill Pichon, Vice President Sharri Proulx, Secretary Terrie Schmidt-Crosby, Treasurer Vikkie Pichon and at-large board members Jackie Allen and Jeff Huiras.
The open house saw a steady stream of visitors curious to see what the organization was all about.
Board members explained the aims of the organization and offered information on membership and volunteer opportunities.
Some of the visitors immediately signed up to be members, while others simply came to see the refurbished interior of the building and chat with other visitors. Some even offered donations on the spot.
The Alliance board provided cookies, popcorn, old-fashioned candies and coffee for the visitors.
First Avenue businessman Nate Lathrop contributed free pizza.
The first Alliance event will be a celebration of the 120th anniversary of the founding of the town of Odessa in 1902. The celebration will be Saturday, April 30, in the Festplatz (at the corner of Division Street and First Avenue.
It will take place in conjunction with the Spring Fling quilt show put on by the Odessa Quilt Club in the high school gymnasium and the city-wide yard sale.
The event will feature vendors of antiques and handcrafted items in keeping with the historical theme of the event, as well as displays of antique farming equipment provided by local farmers along Division Street, which will be closed to through traffic.
The Alliance will also serve a meal of barbecue chicken, pioneer baked beans and a biscuit or a plate of chicken and dumplings at "1902 prices" of $1.50.
A dachshund sausage – hot dog on a bun – will also be served at 1902 prices at a nickel each.
Tea or lemonade will accompany each meal.
Proceeds benefit Odessa Historical Museum.
