ODESSA – The School Board voted to increase the daily substitute teacher pay during a March 23 meeting.
Substitute teachers will now be paid $145 daily, up from $130, effective in March.
In other business, the School Board announced that new paraprofessionals will be required to have four days of training instead of three.
Requirements for students were also announced.
Language access for parent engagement will be provided for bilingual parents.
Student financial literacy education will become a requirement beginning in 2023. Odessa currently offers financial mathematics.
An additional course could be added to the current curriculum, Superintendent Dan Read said.
Read also said schools with more than 200 students must opt for regular art instruction.
One visual art or at least one performing art for students in K-12 must be offered each year, under state requirements, he said.
In other topics:
• School Board redistricting is still under review. A hearing on proposed districts is expected next month.
• Principal Jaime Nelson said the Knowledge Bowl team missed going to regional by a few points, but placed fourth after the regional tournament March 4.
• Athletic Director Bruce Todd reported that the high school track team had its first meet last week, with 12 students participating. The junior high track team begins practice this week with 15 participants. The high school baseball team has 12 players and held their first doubleheader against Ritzville this last weekend. The golf team has 14 participants and has already competed in a couple of tournaments.
• Student led conferences will take place from March 31 to April 1. Students will be released each day at 12:15 p.m. after lunch.
• State Future Business Leaders of America conference will be April 20-23 in Spokane. Roughly 30 students from Odessa qualified to compete in state competition.
• The Future Farmers of America state competition will be May 11-14. Roughly 25 students from Odessa qualified.
• Chris Crossley expressed appreciation to Bruce and Kim Todd for going above and beyond as educators during the past 25 years. Crossley also gave thanks to Dana Mathews and Raymond Pope for their service to the Odessa School District.
• Kim Todd shared a message for supporting her as an educator for the past 25 years.
• The resignations of bus driver Raymond Pope, paraeducator Dana Mathews and Athletic Director Bruce Todd were announced.
• The board next meets in a public workshop at 5:30 p.m. April 22; a regular meeting follows at 6 p.m.
