Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!
MEDICAL LAKE-A six-run fourth inning by the Reardan softball team started to raise indications of a potential upset for the team over the 1A host Cardinals, but the home team went on a 10-run spurt over a three-inning span to erase any questions of a Medical Lake setback in a 17-8 result Tuesday, April 12.
Reardan, competing against its former skipper in first-year Medical Lake head coach John Higgins, plated two runs in the top of the first inning but surrendered four Cardinals runs in the bottom of the frame.
It looked like the game may get away from Reardan by the second inning, when Medical Lake managed three more runs to extend its lead to 7-2.
Two innings later, however, the Reardan bats came alive as the visitors managed six runs in the top of the fourth inning to take an 8-7 lead, much to the delight of the visiting crowd.
But the celebration was short lived, as Medical Lake got six runs of its own in the bottom of the fourth to retake the lead 13-8. That lead became 14-8 heading into the bottom of the sixth inning, when the Cardinals scored three more runs to make it 17-8 before the umpire called the game due to mercy rule.
Reardan's defense didn't aid senior pitcher Alyssa Sosky, committing five errors as the Cardinals picked up 15 hits while Sosky walked five batters.
Offensively, Sosky was 3-for-3 with two runs and an RBI, while fellow senior shortstop Erika Preuschoff was 2-for-4 with two RBI's.
Reardan had nine hits and struck out 13 times.
Medical Lake had just eight runs batted in as a team, with the rest scored off Reardan errors, passed balls or wild pitches.
Reardan dropped to 2-5 with the loss and will look to rebound at Northwest Christian (Colbert) in a doubleheader Saturday, April 16.
