Davenport baseball splits with Kettle Falls

Unusual walkoff circumstance gives Gorillas their win

DAVENPORT-The Gorillas' home doubleheader on Senior Night against the Kettle Falls Bulldogs turned in an unusual win and a lopsided loss Saturday, April 23.

In the first game, Davenport senior ace Denton Deal had the pitching juice, allowing just one run through six innings. The offense managed three runs to hold a 3-1 lead into the last frame.

The Bulldogs then scored twice on a pair of unearned runs, forcing a bottom half of the inning with the game now tied 3-3.

River Crandall led off the home side with a crushed standing double to left-center field. Crandall advanced to third on a wild pitch, and two batters later, Jesse Raugust appeared to drive Crandall in with the winning run on a line-drive opposite-field single.

As Davenport celebrated, the umpire ruled that Crandall didn't touch home plate on his way home, much to the incredulous protests of the Gorilla players and fans.

The game continued, and Raugust rounded the bases on steals and passed balls before scoring the winning run on a wild pitch, giving Davenport the official 4-3 victory.

In the second game, the Bulldog bats came alive and Davenport's offense was stymied as Kettle Falls ran away for a 13-1 victory.

Davenport will conclude the regular season with a pair of games at mighty Chewelah Saturday, April 30.
