Reardan baseball to play for state berth

Team enters third-place game after splitting two at districts Tuesday

COLBERT—The No. 3 seeded Reardan baseball team has a chance to make the state regional tournament after splitting a pair of games at the NE2B District Tournament at Northwest Christian (Colbert) Tuesday, May 10.

The team defeated Asotin in a loser-out game 14-4 before falling to the state-bound Crusaders 11-1 in the district semifinals.

Reardan’s bats came alive after surrendering two first-inning runs against the No. 6-seeded Panthers, led by three triples and five runs batted in by senior Abe Nelson and a home run from catcher Evan Moser.

“We swung the bats really well,” Reardan head coach Matt Clouse said. “We didn’t panic when we got down early…and a lot of guys did little things to score runs.”

After trailing 2-1 following the first inning, Reardan scored at least two runs in each ensuing inning before ending the game in the bottom of the sixth inning with four runs that gave the team a 10-run lead for a mercy rule victory.

Caden Day struck out nine batters and gave up four runs in a six-inning pitching effort for Reardan.

The team then faced the Crusaders and gave up five quick runs in the bottom of the first inning. The NWC bats didn’t let up, with six more runs scored in the next two innings. The game ended in the top of the fifth inning by mercy rule.

“They hit the ball well,” Clouse said. “We weren’t able to string a lot of hits together, and they pitched out of some jams.”

Reardan’s victory over Asotin and loss to NWC put the team in the third-place game against the Colfax Bulldogs at Whitworth University in Spokane Saturday, May 14. The winner heads to the state regional tournament, while the loser’s season ends.

The game is currently scheduled for 3 p.m.

“All the teams in the league are at about the same level, so you have to be focused every game,” Clouse said. “If you don’t bring your agame, you’re going home."
