DAVENPORT-A 37-year-old Carlton man was apprehended by deputies the morning after escaping from Lincoln County Jail. Cody James Magruder escaped Monday night, Aug. 22 and was captured just west of Highway 28 Tuesday morning, Aug. 23.
Magruder, who was booked on charges of possession of a stolen vehicle, second-degree possession of stolen property and third-degree possession of stolen property, allegedly teamed up with fellow inmate Damion Pegram to attack jail/dispatch deputy Dave Husky during a routine checkup around 8 p.m. Monday, according to the Lincoln County Sheriff's Office.
Husky's arm was broken in the altercation.
Magruder and Pegram then allegedly attacked another corrections deputy, who subdued Pegram. However, Magruder was able to escape custody during the second scuffle, authorities said.
News of Magruder's escape began to spread around town shortly thereafter. Residents of Davenport were urged to shelter in place and to call 911 if Magruder was sighted as high school sports practices were cancelled.
Lincoln Hospital went into a precautionary lockdown after the escape.
Reardan residents received a similar warning later Monday night as the search expanded east.
Crews from Spokane County and Airway Heights a K9 unit, the U.S. Marshal and a helicopter were dispatched and alerted to assist the search.
The next morning around 9:40 a.m., a passing motorist told authorities he saw Magruder in a field just west of Highway 28 and north of Mt. View Cemetery Road. Deputies formed a perimeter and indeed found Magruder lying in the tall grass, where he was taken into custody.
Magruder made a scheduled appearance in Superior Court later Tuesday, where his bail was raised from $20,000 to $100,000 as a result of his escape, according to records.
The case remained under investigation as of press time.
