Davenport tops Medical Lake in soccer opener

MEDICAL LAKE-The Davenport soccer team is coming off a 2021 season with mixed results, finishing first in the NE2B in the regular season but falling to rival Reardan in the league playoffs. The Gorillas' quest to take the next step and make a state playoff push got off to a good start Tuesday, handily beating a 1A opponent in the Medical Lake Cardinals 5-0.

The Cardinals hosted the game against the Gorillas in both team's season opener on a sunny day at the field alongside Highway 902.

Scoring came early and often for the Gorillas. Freshman Josie Wynecoop got the party started with a strike from the right-center off an assist from junior Emma Cormier. Freshman Glenna Soliday then punched in a free kick to give Davenport a 2-0 lead in the 17th minute.

An own goal by Medical Lake made it 3-0 Davenport, which was the halftime figure.

Both teams battled defensively for 20 minutes in the second half, but Soliday struck again as the Gorillas headed on their way to a season opening victory.

Freshman Sawyer Raugust added a fifth goal for good measure with seven minutes remaining.

Davenport started the season 1-0 and has its home opener against Mead Monday, Sept. 12 at 6 p.m.

Medical Lake heads on the road this Thursday to take on Newport at 4 p.m.
