Feeble attempt at making away with cash goes awry
DAVENPORT—Staff at the Rickey’s Corner Market gas station at the corner of Morgan and 12th Streets went through something any gas station employee fears last Friday…an attempted robbery. Records suggest, however, that this attempt for all the goods in the cash register went awry for the perpetrator.
Police records state that Casey Lattanzi, 39, of Vancouver asked for two packs of cigarettes and said he wanted to pay using Apple Pay around 8:50 a.m. Friday, Sept. 16. After the payment didn’t go through, Lattanzi stepped back and allowed eyewitness Clifford Hicks of Olympia to purchase his items. After Hicks’ transaction was complete, Lattanzi demanded that cashier Parveen Kalia of Airway Heights give him the money from the cash register.
Kalia was unable to open the register, so Lattanzi reached across the counter and began pushing random buttons trying to get the register to open. He finally gave up and left through the main doors after only getting away with the two packs of cigarettes, according to reports.
Hicks told authorities he saw Lattanzi headed toward the Safeway Apartments. Security camera footage confirmed Kalia and Hicks’ accounts to the police, records state.
Lattanzi was arrested Friday afternoon and charged with one count of second-degree robbery, according to police reports. No one was physically injured in the incident.
