LRS runs Davenport out of the building in shutout win

RITZVILLE – The scoring came early and the scoring came often for the Lind-Ritzville/Sprague Broncos when the Davenport Gorillas paid a visit. The scoring was nonexistent on the other side, resulting in a lopsided 40-0 win for LRS Friday, Sept. 23.
Sophomore Brody Boness put LRS in the scoring column with a 49-yard touchdown run after Davenport was forced to punt on its opening drive.
The signs of disaster became apparent for Davenport on the ensuing kickoff, when the ball took a strange hop near the far sideline glanced off senior Brenick Soliday's hands where the Broncos recovered at the 11-yard line. Senior quarterback Chase Galbreath ran in from nine yards out untouched to quickly give LRS a 14-0 lead.
Davenport put together one of its best drives as the second quarter began, but couldn't convert and turned the ball over on downs.
LRS quickly found itself back in the endzone after a 51-yard Galbreath run up the gut to make it 21-0. Galbreath accounted for his third touchdown of the day with a five-yard flip to Cooper Miller later in the second quarter, and the Broncos had the game in the bag by halftime with a 27-0 lead.
(We played) with great energy, keeping the enthusiasm and being ready to go," LRS head coach Brendan Bermea said. "We've talked about it, being ready when it's time and not letting up when we can put the game away. I think we accomplished that tonight."
Galbreath apparently injured his foot during the first half and came out for the second half on crutches. He was replaced under center by sophomore Jayce Kelly, who tossed a screen pass to Boness on the first drive of the second half. The second half of that connection did the rest, maneuvering for a 76-yard score.
"They're just a good team. They've jumped on everybody early so far this year," Davenport head coach Justin Young said. "They didn't really lose anybody from last year when they made that run, so we knew they were going to be tough. We were hoping as coaches we would put together a better game, but you can't play decent, solid games like this with the turnovers we've had."
LRS's statement win improved the Broncos to 3-1 ahead of a road trip to Colbert this Saturday against the Northwest Christian Crusaders at 1 p.m. Davenport, meanwhile, fell to 3-1 with the loss and hosts league-leading Liberty Friday, Sept. 30 at 7 p.m.
