Davenport girls, Reardan boys to each send one runner
CHEWELAH-The Davenport boys cross country team was one of five teams to advance to the 1B/2B State Cross Country Championships thanks to a prime performance at the regional meet at the Chewelah Golf Course Saturday, Oct. 29.
The Gorillas finished second to the host school with 85 points. The top five boys teams advanced to state: Chewelah, Davenport, Valley Christian, St. George's and Garfield-Palouse.
The Davenport girls and Reardan boys didn't qualify as a team, but will send one runner each based on individual performances.
Freshman Josie Wynecoop finished third in the girls race with a time of 20:29.3 to qualify for Davenport, while sophomore Gabe Branstetter of Reardan finished 31st in the boys race with a time of 18:44.4.
The top 35 boys finishers and top 12 girls finishers qualified for state as individuals.
St. George's and Garfield-Palouse were the two team qualifying schools on the girls side.
Junior Jaeger Jacobsen ran the best race for the Davenport boys, finishing second with a time of 16:42.4. Senior Jesse Raugust finished 18th at 18:08.2, while senior Zack Bruce wasn't far behind with a time of 18:23.9 to finish 20th.
Those who qualified for state will head to Sun Willows Golf Course Saturday, Nov. 5 for the 5,000 meters championship meet. The girls run at 10 a.m and the boys run at 11:30 a.m.
