Capital levy was failing as of Tuesday night
REARDAN-–The local school district's five-year capital levy to fund improvements to athletic facilities and the construction of a transportation cooperative facility was failing 931-655, with up to 1,000 votes yet to be tallied from ballots in Lincoln County after votes were counted on election night, Nov. 8.
The levy would increase property taxes by approximately $285 for property valued at $300,000.
Funds from the levy would reimburse the district for lights already purchased and installed for the football field, new tennis courts, a rubberized track and a new transportation building.
Superintendent Eric Sobotta was disappointed in the vote tally but felt the district did a good job conveying the need for improved athletic facilities to district voters.
"At least they knew what they were voting for," Sobotta said. "I will continue to fight for our students. I want our facilities to be safe and as equitable to the other schools in our area."
Sobotta said he hopes to hear from voters to learn why they would turn the levy down.
The levy was passing in Lincoln County 318-316 and failing in Spokane County 615-337 as of Tuesday night, with the next local count expected Thursday afternoon.
