Reardan C.A.R.E.s about the needy

"The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of its members."

-Coretta Scott King

REARDAN--We C.A.R.E. is kicking off a "Blessing Boxes" program this holiday season. C.A.R.E. (Care About Reardan/Edwall) is a non-profit outreach of Reardan's four churches, along with other community members whose goal is to serve residents of the Reardan-Edwall area, particularly those in need.

"Blessing Boxes are like the Little Free Library boxes that have popped up recently, except they will be filled with emergency food items for people who can't get to the food pantry," coordinator Virginia Henderson said.

Reardan High School AG teacher Dan'a Borland's shop class designed and built the five Blessing Boxes to be installed on private property before Christmas.

They will be monitored and stocked by "volunteer caretakers," and affixed to the box will be a sign that says, "Take what you need, give what you can," Henderson said.

"The boxes will have non-perishable, easy to prepare, single serving meals," she added.

Food donated to the food pantry will fill the Blessing Boxes, but Henderson hopes community members replenish the boxes themselves. The R-Store will also accept non-perishable donations for the pantry.

Henderson is grateful to the school's shop class and basketball team for partnering with them on this program.

The boys team will have a food drive at Yoke's Fresh Market in Airway Heights on Friday, Nov. 25 from noon to 1:30. All donations will go to the food pantry and the Blessing Boxes program.

"Two of our team goals are servanthood and thankfulness," coach Brian Graham said. "When our boys put on the Reardan uniform they represent our community, which means helping those in need."

Henderson has been involved with the outreach since its inception three years ago. As coordinator of the We C.A.R.E Food Pantry, she knows firsthand the needs of her community.

We C.A.R.E. has distributed holiday food baskets, coordinated the Reardan-Edwall School District Bite2Go Program and provided financial help for emergency needs.

"We want to show God's love by caring for our community," Henderson said.
