Davenport girls cruise past Reardan

Gorillas get second straight win

DAVENPORT–The Lady Gorillas took care of business against Highway 2 rival Reardan in girls NE2B basketball, winning the game 64-34 Tuesday, Dec. 13.

Behind the shooting of Glenna Soliday and Emalie Jacoby, Davenport jumped out to a 27-9 lead and never looked back. A barrage of 3-point shots by Soliday, Jacoby and Kiersten Kemmerer fueled a 15-point run which put the Lady Gorillas up 32-14 at the half.

In the second half, Jensyn Jacobsen took control of Davenport's offense by scoring 11 points.

Davenport displayed an impressive balance in team scoring by chalking up 17, 15, 16, 16 points per quarter.

"I thought we played better than we did in our first game," Davenport coach Stacia Soliday said. "We worked on our help defense and that made a difference tonight. We moved the ball well and did a good job executing our offense."

Soliday and Jacoby each finished the game with 15 points, followed by Jacobsen's 11. Soliday and Jacoby pulled down eight and seven rebounds, respectively.

Addie Schneider scored eight points and Clare Lathrop and Kemmerer each pitched in six.

"The game was really hard fought," Kemmerer said. "I think the intensity we started with carried us throughout the whole game. Emalie Jacoby did really good this game, as did Addie when she came off the bench."

Liberty Anderson led Reardan in scoring with 11 points, followed by Tenice Waters with seven.

"I think we played with a lot of effort tonight," Anderson said. "Our defense was pretty good for the first 10 seconds of each possession, but we weren't helping each other in the paint. There wasn't any communication going on. Once we start doing that, we'll play better."

Emma Flaa and Justine Flett each grabbed six rebounds for the Screaming Eagles.

"I think we came a long way in a week," Reardan coach Bob Swannack said. "We put in a new system, and we're struggling, but we showed signs of success tonight. Once we get in better shape, I think we're going to be all right. I've got a bunch of girls who haven't played a lot of varsity minutes, but they play hard. We'll get there eventually. It's how you finish, not how you start."

With the win, Davenport improved to 2-1. Reardan's loss dropped the Screaming Eagles to 0-2.

Davenport's next game is at home against St. George's on Friday, Dec. 16 at 6 p.m. Reardan hosts Chewelah the same night.
