Sweet hopes for apartment expansion

DAVENPORT — Mayor Brad Sweet hopes to see more apartment complexes and housing developments in the city, he said during an annual mayor and media meeting with The Record-Times this week.

Sweet said he met with a contractor who said garage-over condos might suit the city as an option for higher-end apartments that those with reliable, solid incomes could occupy. He also wants to eventually expand Cottonwood Apartments for more local low-income housing options.

Other than three houses being built by the Municipal Airport, there are no updates on housing expansion, Sweet said.

“I haven’t heard anything new about the Hillcrest development,” Sweet said, referring to a proposed group of homes northwest of the city.

Sweet also wants to explore the possibility of the city doing a land swap with the Department of Natural Resources for a roughly-300 acre parcel that encompasses the city sewer lagoons north of the baseball complex and wraps north of the Northridge development that could house future home additions.

“Can we land swap since they don’t sell…and sell to developers,” Sweet said. He added that the city may have to expand the sewer lagoons to accompany new housing developments.

The city is currently hesitant to spend money on a potential new tank for additional water storage until it must due to high costs, Sweet said, though he added that the current city reserves for water and sewer problems are in good shape.

“Probably the highest they’ve been since I’ve been here,” Sweet said.

There are no current plans for expansion at the airport, though there are talks of installing a Jet A fuel tank. The costs may outweigh the potential benefits, however, he said.

“I’m not sure we can justify funding it unless there’s outside funding,” Sweet said.
