Gorillas top Kettle Falls, Asotin, Chewelah
DAVENPORT-After getting routed at home by the Liberty Lancers last Tuesday, the Davenport girls decided to do the routing themselves with three straight convincing victories over Kettle Falls, Asotin and Chewelah this week.
Kettle Falls was the first foe to be felled Friday, Jan. 6. Davenport won 54-23 behind 20 points from eighth-grader Emalie Jacoby, who noticed 20 points and 10 steals. Clare Lathrop added 10 points off the bench.
Asotin came to town Saturday, Jan. 7 and succumbed to a full-court press barrage in the first quarter that allowed Davenport to take a 32-6 lead. Davenport let off the pressure in the second quarter and varied between zone and man defenses while taking a 44-17 halftime lead.
"It doesn't always work that well, but today we looked a little bit quicker and more efficient with it," Davenport head coach Stacia Soliday said of her team's full-court defensive pressure.
The Gorillas extended their lead to 40 points by the final buzzer to win 66-26. Glenna Soliday was the leading scorer with 18 points, while Kiersten Kemmerer added 15 points. Lena Waters scored 11 points, while Jacoby and Lathrop added 10 points apiece.
"I think (the loss to Liberty) really opened our minds up that we need to play harder and that worked for us," Kemmerer said. "We came out with intense defense and offense."
Chewelah didn't fare much better against Davenport's pressure defense despite jumping out to a 13-9 lead that Davenport flipped into a 19-13 advantage after one quarter.
The Gorillas led 36-23 by halftime before blowing the doors open in the third quarter to build its lead to 60-34 before finally winning 75-41.
Jacoby had the best statistical game of her young career with 30 points and 10 steals. Soliday added 13 points and five steals for Davenport.
"We're really communicating and getting better as a team," Jacoby said. "I think we're growing."
Davenport will face its biggest challenge against first-place Colfax at 6 p.m. Friday, Jan. 13.
