Greeny voted into WIAA Hall of Fame

Local standout to be inducted in early May

DAVENPORT-Former three-sport local star and current Washington State University head volleyball coach Jennifer (Stinson) Greeny was voted as a member of the WIAA Hall of Fame Class of 2022, the WIAA announced last week.

Greeny excelled in volleyball, basketball and track at Davenport in her four-year career from 1991-1995.

"I was really honored and excited," Greeny said. "Especially being around Washington high school athletics my whole life with my dad and brothers being heavily involved."

Greeny and the rest of the Class of 2022 will be inducted in a Renton ceremony Wednesday, May 3.

Her best sport at Davenport was on the hardwood. The Gorillas won the state championship her freshman and sophomore year, going undefeated in the latter. The team finished second and third in her junior and senior years.

Greeny's 2,881 career points was the state record for any level until 2020, when it was broken by Cashmere's Hailey Van Lith.

She remembered taking the State B tournament by storm in the Gorillas' undefeated 1993 season that also included a lineup of Stacia and Andee Marriott, Holli Stoner, Kaarin Reinbold, Alyson Iverson, Lacy Carson and Cara Anderson.

That team was coached by Jim Stinson, Greeny's father, and Chuck Jungblom.

"That year...we knew we could be really good," Greeny said.

Many of those same girls joined Greeny on the volleyball court in the fall, where the team won state her junior year and finished third twice in her four years. That team was coached by Pete Schweiger, who was inducted into the Davenport Hall of Fame last year.

"It's funny, because volleyball was probably my worst sport at the time," Greeny, now a PAC-12 head volleyball coach, said.

In the springs, Greeny excelled in track and field behind Jim Stinson's coaching, winning the state high jump championship her sophomore, junior and senior years. A hamstring injury prevented her from going for Ronaldo Dunn of Raymond's state record of 5'9" set in 1989 that still stands.

Off the court, Greeny said her favorite high school teachers were Barb Teel, Rawleigh Fisk and Jean Parsons. Dave Iverson was superintendent and Harold Patterson was principal during Greeny's high school athletics career.

"We moved to Davenport my freshman year. Sometimes that can be really tough, moving to a small town. But the people of Davenport were really welcoming," Greeny said. "I think of myself as being from Davenport."

After high school, Greeny was recruited to WSU as a three-sport athlete, where volleyball became her premium sport. She said she chose WSU for its proximity to home and its support of female athletics.

She has been the head coach in Pullman since March 2011 after several high school and junior college coaching stints.

"I wouldn't be going into the Hall of Fame if not for all of my teammates," she said. "It's definitely not an individual honor."

Greeny will be inducted into the WIAA Hall of Fame in a Renton ceremony Wednesday, May 3. Other members of the Class of 2022 include Dave Tikker of Spokane, Dale Blair of Wenatchee, Bruce Harrell of Garfield High School, Suzanne Marble of La Conner and official Tim Stevens.
