Davenport tops Brewster for program's first state title

Gorillas surmount eight-point deficit in comeback win

SPOKANE-1961, 2009 and 2023. Those are the three years that the Davenport boys basketball team made the B State Championship game.

The only team to win that game? This year's iteration of the Gorillas, who came back to defeat No. 5 Brewster 65-58 in the 2B State Championship game at the Spokane Arena Saturday, March 4 to capture the program's first state title in school history.

"Most of these kids have been playing together since they were in second grade, and watching them grow up together, fight through adversity, and first state championship in school history, it means a lot," Davenport superintendent Chad Prewitt said. "Coach (Matt) Henry said it best, this is something that the community should be proud of and the school should be proud of."

Davenport had to battle back against a tough, experienced Bears squad. Brewster built a 24-16 lead while holding the Gorillas' offense squarely in check.

But as they've done all year, the Gorillas adjusted and battled back in the second half, finally gaining the lead back early in the fourth quarter before holding off a late Brewster surge.

Tennessee Rainwater led Davenport with 25 points and seven rebounds, while Brenick Soliday drilled four threes en route to a huge 17 points.

Cash Colbert had 11 rebounds for Davenport, while Jaeger Jacobsen had eight points, including six massive free throws in the fourth quarter to keep Brewster at bay.
