Resolution 'close' in Bergman first-degree murder case

Readiness hearing moved to May

DAVENPORT — A resolution in the first-degree murder case of Charles R. Bergman is “close,” defense attorney Dave Hearrean told presiding Judge Jeffrey S. Barkdull at a brief court appearance Tuesday, March 21.

Bergman’s trial is currently scheduled for May 17, but discussion Tuesday indicated a resolution is likely before the case goes to trial.

Hearrean did note that if “something goes sour” in resolution negotiations, the defense will go forward with a trial.

He then requested that Bergman’s readiness hearing be continued to April 25, which prosecuting attorney Adam Walser had no objection to.

Due to a schedule conflict, Barkdull pushed the hearing a week later to May 2.

The 54-year-old Bergman of Moses Lake is charged with first-degree murder.

He is accused of killing his wife, Theresa Bergman, with a shovel about 10 miles north of Sprague in Sept. 2022.

Theresa Bergman’s body was found by a local farmer near Stolp Road Thursday, Sept. 22.

Charles Bergman has been housed in Lincoln County Jail since he was extradited from a Pennsylvania jail in December.
