AED's spread around county

Highline Grain acquires units through grant

REARDAN - The risk of cardiac arrest is a scary proposition, but there are now more tools to address an episode in Lincoln County thanks to a series of automated external defibrillators (AEDs) acquired by Highline Grain Growers through a $5,000 matching grant program.

The units have been disbursed in the last two weeks by Fire District No. 4 and is a medical device aimed at analyzing a heart's rhythm and deliver an electric shock to the heart without the need of mouth-to-mouth CPR.

Highline Grain human resources manager Krissi Bell said the model is a Zol AED plus and is designed for anyone to use.

"The machine will actually walk you through how to use it step by step," Bell said.

However, Fire District No. 4 has been conducting trainings at the sites where AED's are being placed in an effort to have trained staff members on site.

Locally, units were placed at Highline Grain Growers in Davenport, the SpeedTrap Tap House in Reardan and Odessa Foods. Other units have been placed in Wilbur, Almira and Waterville.

"Remember that CPR gives a chance of survival, but it doesn't guarantee it'll make you live," Fire District No. 4 firefighter Doug Bonstrom said.
