Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!

Revitalized showcase is Saturday

WSU Extension hosting event at Fairgrounds

DAVENPORT — A junior livestock showcase once known as the Purple Ribbon Preview is returning this year with a new sponsor and name. The Washington State University Extension office is sponsoring the 2023 Lincoln County Spring Showcase for the first time Saturday, April 15 at the Lincoln County Fairgrounds.

The free-to-attend all-day event will feature swine, sheep, goat and steer showings and judging. Monday, April 10 was the last day to register to showcase online, but registrations will be accepted the day of show for $15.

Lincoln and Adams 4-H Program Coordinator Randy Williams said youngsters from all over Eastern Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana have signed up to participate. Most are from public or private schools that are involved in 4-H or FFA groups, with some homeschooled students mixed in.

“It should be a pretty good show,” Williams said. “We should have some big banner awards.”

The showcase is intended to be something of a warm-up for children showing at the Junior Livestock Show in Spokane in May, Williams said.

“We have a couple young gals judging from Texas A&M and Colorado State,” Williams said.

The Extension is sponsoring the event for the first time. The showcase was sponsored by the Reardan-based Ray and Wagner families pre-COVID.

“We held the showcase for about three years,” Reardan-based farmer Ian Wagner said.

Registration, weigh-ins, vet checks and classifications begin at 8 a.m.

Judging of swine, lamb and meat goats for prospect lightweight, prospect/progress medium weight, progress heavyweight divisions and Supreme Grand and Reserve Grand Champion selections run between 9 a.m.-11 a.m.

4-H swine, sheep and meat goat showmanship, 4-H junior, intermediate and senior age divisions, FFA age divisions, Champion and Reserve Champion selections and 4-H and FFA Select Grand and Reserve Champion selections of each species run between 11 a.m.–1 p.m.

Steer judging runs between 1:30 p.m.-2:30 p.m. The showcase concludes with beef showmanship and champion selections from 2:30 p.m.-4 p.m.
