Schlomer hired as head football coach

ODESSA - The high school baseball coach will be coaching the football team this fall. Local Joe Schlomer was given the job as approved by the school board Tuesday, June 6.

Schlomer will take over for longtime coach Jeff Nelson, who announced his retirement as football coach in January.

The 48-year-old Schlomer is coaching tackle football for the first time. He said he has five years of flag football coaching experience and applied for the high school job after baseball season.

"They literally showed up at my house begging me to coach," Schlomer said. "I figured if I didn't take it, we wouldn't have a team this year."

He said he'll be assisted by Colley Walters and Charles Short.

Schlomer played high school football at Moses Lake High School and expects that this year's Odessa team can make another playoff run.

"We're excited for what we can show," Schlomer said.

He said he expects the biggest adjustment in being a rookie football coach will be learning the various "ins and outs" of the job, like running practices, tracking heat indexes and learning proper safety measures. He's confident in his play-calling ability, he said.

Schlomer's day job is for National Frozen Foods in Moses Lake.

His game coaching debut is scheduled for Saturday, Sept. 2 at Waterville-Mansfield.
