Mid-County Seniors get grant funds

Harrington — The Mid-County Seniors didn’t get denied their chunk of the $197,000 granted to the Lincoln County Dept. of Health from the state department for local Senior Centers. The Lincoln County Commissioners agreed to sign a contract giving $20,000 to the volunteer-run organization operating from Memorial Hall.

Originally, $40,000 apiece was apportioned to Senior Centers in Davenport, Reardan, Odessa and Wilbur.

“We didn’t include Harrington because we thought they closed in 2021,” Public Health Director Ed Dzedzy said. “The request is for $20,000 because that’s how much that was left after we gave $40,000 each to the other Senior Centers.”

Fire snuffed near Hawk Creek

Davenport — Fire crews were able to snuff a 2-acre fire within an hour at 33000 Hawk Creek Road East Sunday, June 18.

Fire District No. 5 responded to the call with four trucks, a water tender and 12 firefighters, assistant fire chief Cory Hollis said.

“The flames were about two inches high,” Hollis said. “It was nothing spectacular.”

The Department of Natural Resources is investigating the cause and aided fire efforts with an engine and 10-man handcrew, Hollis said.
