Keller girl killed in Wilbur crash

All passengers injured, police say

WILBUR — A Keller girl was killed in a single-car crash outside town late Friday night, June 23.

16-year-old Mary Jayne LaPlante died in the rollover crash that also injured five other juveniles at Sherman Road North and Williams Road East.

Initial indications showed that LaPlante was the driver of the vehicle, officials said.

The call came into the Lincoln County Sheriff’s Office around 11:13 p.m. Friday night, officials said.

LaPlante was officially declared deceased early Saturday, June 24.

Authorities are still investigating the cause of the crash that caused the vehicle to roll multiple times.

One unnamed juvenile in the vehicle was still in the hospital with critical condition as of press time. The other four youths were taken to the hospital with injuries but have since been released, officials said.

Authorities are still investigating whether drugs or alcohol were involved in the crash.

LaPlante was a student at Wilbur-Creston-Keller High School and a first-line descendent of the Colville Confederated Tribes.

A wake was held for LaPlante at 7 p.m. Wednesday, June 28 and a funeral was held at 10 a.m. Thursday, June 29. Both were at the Keller Community Center.

She will be buried in the San Poil Indian Cemetery, according to a Facebook post by the school district.

A GoFundMe was organized to help with funeral costs. It had raised over $6,000 by press time.

The school district opened from 1 p.m. – 4 p.m. Saturday, June 25 to offer counseling to students.
