Odessa gears up for Fourth of July

ODESSA - Residents are offered many options to celebrate the July 4 holiday this year.

The high school's Future Business Leaders of America chapter will be hosting a Fireworks stand in the parking lot of Odessa Foods behind the gazebo, 112 West First Avenue.

Students will be selling fireworks from 10 a.m.-4 p.m. Friday, June 30-Tuesday, July 4.

The students will be fundraising for the many events they do year-round, such as regional, state and national competitions.

Volunteer Lindsay Reyes said all the kids were "very hard-working," explaining the time and effort they put into their respective activities through FBLA.

This is Reyes' first year helping run the stand and she is excited to raise money for the students.

Along with the fireworks stand, the Odessa Fire Department will be hosting its annual Barbeque Luncheon in Reiman Park, at 11:30 a.m. July 4. It will last for about two hours.

All are welcome to enjoy as the department serves pulled pork, baked beans and other barbeque fare.

Local Laura Estes mentioned a "go to" spot frequently used to set off fireworks safely: A parking lot near the Odessa High School football field that is generally free from brush and allows for everyone to see the fireworks.

Lincoln County Fire District No. 3 issued a burn ban Monday June 26.

The district said the ban is indefinite but only includes open burning. Rural district Chief Roger Sebesta said that the ban doesn't include fireworks.

There was a previous burn ban issued Thursday, June 15 with the same connotations. Both bans excluded fireworks but warned residents of the extremely dry conditions of the area.
