Fireworks, no fires

Fire crews enjoy quiet Fourth of July

DAVENPORT - Despite rather windy conditions on some of the days and locals taking full advantage of legal fireworks opportunities, Fourth of July weekend was almost completely incident-less for fire and EMS crews around East, Central and South Lincoln County.

Fire District No. 5 Commissioner Matt Schneider said the district, which includes the greater Davenport, Deer Meadows, Seven Bays and Egypt areas, didn't receive a single call for service over the weekend.

"Clearly we're not out of it, since there will probably be fireworks the next couple days," Schneider said. "But over Fourth of July weekend we had no calls up north or in town."

That sentiment was echoed by Fire District No. 4 Chief Jim Adams. His district covers the Reardan, Edwall and Long Lake areas.

"Typical Fourth with lots of fireworks inside town limits," Adams said. "(But) no emergencies or other related incidents."

In Fire District No. 6, which includes the greater Harrington area, it was similarly slow for emergency's sake.

"I was in town, and it sounded like a warzone," Commissioner Ron Mielke said. "But there were no incidents that I know of.

"We weren't paged out for anything."

Fire District No. 3, which includes the Odessa and Marlin areas, also saw locals taking the dry conditions and fire danger seriously.

"We haven't had anything since Friday, when we had a mutual aide call from Wilbur," rural Chief Roger Sebesta said. "Nothing from fireworks or anything.

"They're pretty careful about that stuff around here. It's dry country."

Lincoln County Sheriff Gabe Gants said a small fire broke out near Creston, but aside from a drowning near Laughbon Landing, the Fourth of July was largely quiet emergency-wise countywide.

Fireworks were legal through Wednesday, July 5.

Burn bans are in place in Fire Districts No. 3, 5 and 6.
