Spokane man has previous experience
HARRINGTON - A Spokane man has been named the new part-time superintendent of the school district here.
Howard King, 70, was unanimously approved for hire by the school board at a regular meeting Wednesday, June 28. He was the choice amongst three finalists vetted by the board, administration and community, the last of whom got a chance to question him at a forum in June.
"I learned about (the opening) about four weeks ago through people I know," King said. "The ESD advertises that kind of thing."
King is currently the superintendent of the Evergreen School District in the Addy-Gifford area in Stevens County and lives on the South Hill of Spokane.
He looks forward to a shorter commute and plans to spend two to three days in Harrington per week.
King has 15 years of superintendent experience and 15 years of principal experience, translating to 30 total years of administrative work.
"He has superintendent experience, small school experience and he has a family connection to the area," board chairman Justin Slack said.
King's mother, Irma Jantz, and aunt, Bertha Jantz, graduated from Harrington High School in the late 1930s.
"I liked his energy," board member Darren Mattozzi said. "He's respected in the supe community and I'm excited for what he's going to bring to the school."
King said he's going to work to get to know the landscape of the school district and identify its biggest issues to resolve.
"It's all workable," King said. "One thing we're going to wrestle with is what to do with the pool. It's going to cost a pretty penny."
King has one grown child and two grandchildren in Spokane.
His contract began Saturday, July 1, and runs three years through 2026.
