Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!

Warners named Pioneer Days grand marshals

DAVENPORT - The people of Davenport had the vote for who would be this year's Pioneer Days Parade Grand Marshal(s), and the leader was overwhelmingly a couple that has lived here for 36 years and devotes countless hours each week to running Lincoln County Care and Share.

Jerry and Cindy Warner will be the honored guests in this year's Parade.

The Warners, aged 76 and 72 respectively, moved to the Hawk Creek area in 1987 with their two daughters Tammie (Buck) and Heather (Dickinson). Jerry Warner had suffered an industrial accident and was unable to work, so Cindy went to work for Dave Mandere at Dave's Hardware, now Hardy Hardware.

After Jerry recovered from his accident, the family founded Warner Construction, remodeling homes and building houses. They moved to the city three years ago.

Though technically retired, the Warners spend most of their time operating the nonprofit Care and Share at 203 Morgan Street.

Cindy, the Care and Share president, estimated she spends 50 hours a week at Care and Share...all without compensation.

"The people and the town," Cindy Warner said when asked what prompts her to devote that much time to Care and Share. "I enjoy volunteering and making connections with the community."

Jerry Warner often helps at Care and Share and keeps himself busy, despite his retirement status.

"(Full) retirement wasn't cut out," Jerry Warner said.

Pioneer Days chairwoman Dawn Canfield told the Warners they had been voted Grand Marshals about two weeks ago. The announcement was publicized Monday, July 3.

"I was pretty surprised," Cindy Warner said. "It just means that the recognition and the support was overwhelming for what we do here at Care and Share."

The Care and Share sells household items donated by community members. All proceeds go to food, which is given to those in need free of charge, as are most clothing items.

"Everyone knows my red car and that it's usually parked outside here," Cindy Warner said. "If it's parked outside Care and Share, come on in, even if we're not open."

In addition to their time spent at Care and Share, the Warners have enjoyed supporting their grandchildren at concerts and sporting events. Jerry Warner is an active member of the Lions Club.

The two will break from their volunteerism, if only for a moment, for the parade that begins at 11 a.m. Saturday, July 15.

"We're grateful for what we have," Cindy Warner said.
