Multiple field, forest blazes around region
DAVENPORT - Fire districts around Lincoln County responded to multiple field fires while providing mutual aide to a forest fire outside Cheney in the last week.
The largest Lincoln County fire of the week ignited east of Rocklyn Road and south of Harrington Airport Road Friday, July 28.
Crews from Fire District No. 6 and No. 5 worked together to put out the field blaze that was started by farm equipment, District No. 6 commissioner Ron Mielke said.
"We got called out three times because it kept flaring up," Mielke said. "I would estimate it was about 50 to 70 acres, so it was definitely concerning."
Davenport crews helped with the second flare-up Sunday, July 30, Mielke and District No. 5 Commissioner Matt Schneider said.
Fire District No. 3 crews from Odessa were also busy with a field fire Friday, responding to a 30-acre blaze about half a mile south of Lincoln County in Adams County at Lesser and Davis Roads.
"I believe it started from swathing straw," Rural District Chief Roger Sebesta said. "We sent about four or five trucks...the Hutterites sent a truck too, since it was on their land."
The fire occurred in a tri-county area a mile from Grant County and a half mile from Lincoln County, Sebesta said.
Over in East Lincoln County, Reardan crews from Fire District No. 4 put out a small 20-foot by 20-foot fire alongside Krupke and Alexander Roads Thursday, July 27.
"It was just weeds blazing alongside the road," District Chief Jim Adams said.
Reardan and Sprague also sent units to help with the West Hallett Road that started in the 6000 block of Cheney-Spokane Road Monday, July 31.
About 155 acres burned in the blaze that was aided by strong winds and forced Level 3 evacuations in the area.
