Odessa prepares for gridiron action

Tigers open at Waterville Sept. 2

ODESSA - Coming off a state semifinal appearance, the Tiger football team is back at practice this week gearing up for what it hopes is a return trip to the state playoffs and championship contention.

And for the first time, Odessa will be seeking that contention status under rookie head coach Joe Schlomer, who said he'll be relying on three seniors and a bevy of juniors to carry the load for this year's squad.

"We're actually not looking too bad," Schlomer said after the team had completed three practices. "Team-wise, we're looking pretty darn good. They're my diamonds, so I have scuffs to put out before they can shine."

Schlomer, also the high school's head baseball coach, said the starting offensive unit will include three seniors, three juniors, a sophomore and a freshman.

Senior Zane McMillan replaces Collin Martin at quarterback, while senior Chad Strebeck and junior Corbyn Nielsen will handle carries out of the backfield. Senior Dakota Stewart and sophomore Cason Wallace are at tight end, while the starting offensive line features juniors Garrick Rosman and Tucker Walter and freshman Sawyer Walter.

Schlomer, who also acts as defensive coordinator, will be aided by offensive coordinator Charles Short and lines/special teams coach Colley Walter.

The Tigers' first test on the road to the 1B state playoffs will be a road matchup in Waterville Saturday, Sept. 2. Kickoff is scheduled for 1 p.m.

And Odessa will have its home opener a week before Deutchesfest against Oroville Friday, Sept. 8.
