Odessa man dies in accident

Death caused by live wire

ODESSA—A local man died after reportedly touching a live wire following a one-vehicle crash in rural Grant County Monday, Sept. 4.

37-year-old Ryan Frick was killed around 11 p.m. Monday shortly after his vehicle crashed into a telephone pole while driving north around the 5300 block of Road W Northeast near the tiny community of Ruff, according to Grant County Sheriff’s Office collision investigator Stormy Baughman.

But it wasn’t the car crash that resulted in Frick’s death. According to Baughman, the telephone pole broke and brought wires down. When Frick got out of his car following the crash, he contacted a live wire and was electrocuted, Baughman said.

The crash reportedly started a small brush and vehicle fire, which crews quickly extinguished.

Frick had just started work as a mechanic at Walter Implement, aunt Charlene Kagele of Odessa said. He enjoyed playing baseball and was returning from doing so in Moses Lake Monday night, she said.

Prior to work at Walter Implement, Frick worked at Odessa Memorial Healthcare Clinic. He also enjoyed helping his uncle, Tom Frick, on the family farm.

“He enjoyed family time,” Kagele said.

Frick had a wife, Amanda, and two children, 14-year-old Caleb and 10-year-old Carina.

Funeral arrangements hadn’t been made by press time.
