David Berne Barnard
1923 - 2023
David Berne Barnard passed away on Aug. 28, 2023, shortly after reaching his goal of celebrating his 100th birthday. He was the 2nd of 3 children born to Burton and Dorris Barnard. He graduated from Reardan High School in 1942 and entered military service in 1943. He served in Italy, France, and Germany, including the Anzio Landing, the Southern France Landing and up to Berlin with the Army Combat Engineer Corps. He was honorably discharged in November of 1945 and married his high school sweetheart, Doris Mae Nielson on Dec. 2, 1945. To this union were born three children: Cheryl August, David Barnard, and Julie Powell. The family farmed north of Reardan, then moved to Cheney Wash. in 1966.
Berne later worked as a maintenance electrician for the State of Washington. After retiring, Berne and Doris spent winters in Mesa, Ariz. Doris succumbed to ovarian cancer in March of 1996 after 50 years of marriage.
On Aug. 21, 1999, Berne married Dody (Doris E) Wimer of Mesa, Ariz. and Yakima, Wash. They made their home in Mesa before moving to Kennewick, Wash. in 2008 in order to be closer to family.
He was preceded in death by his parents, B.L. Barnard and Dorris Barnard, stepmother Etta Barnard, wife Doris Mae, brother Harl Barnard, son David Barnard and second wife Dody (Doris E.) Barnard.
He is survived by his sister, Beth Krause of Spokane, Wash., daughters Cheryl (Mick) August, Julie (Rod) Powell, daughter-in-law Paula Barnard, 6 grandchildren Amy (Ryan) Costanti, Adam (Tina) August, Dan Barnard, Krista (Steve) Hamilton, Rod (Lori) Powell, Colleen Strand, 7 great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews. Also surviving are stepchildren Rod (Candace) Wimer, Ken (Laurie) Wimer, and Rhonda (Tom) Root, 6 step grandchildren and 15 step great grandchildren.
Following cremation there will be a private family service at Spring Creek Cemetery in Reardan. Memorial donations may be made to the charity of your choice.
