Serving Lincoln County for more than a century!
DAVENPORT-A day after spending Friday in Yakima at the Sundome Tournament, the Gorilla volleyball team hosted two matches with mixed results Saturday, Sept. 9.
The Gorillas swept rival Reardan 25-22, 25-22, 25-19 in the first match, then fell to Northport in four sets 28-30, 21-25, 25-19, 22-25.
Davenport and Reardan's match was a battle, despite what the three-set result might indicate. The squads were tied 17-17 in the first set before Reardan took a 22-21 lead, but Davenport scored four straight to secure the set.
Davenport built a 15-9 lead in the second set, but Reardan quickly tied the score 15-15 with a 6-0 run. The Gorillas were able to outscore the Screaming Eagles 10-7 for another set win.
Reardan took a 9-6 lead in the third set, but Davenport got in a rhythm from there, outscoring Reardan 16-10 down the stretch to secure the sweep.
Naomi Rainwater had 12 kills, while Selah Hupp had 11 kills and six digs to lead the Gorillas. Faith Bell added 10 assists and two aces, while Tatum Hupp had nine digs.
Reardan was paced by Emersen Sprecher's nine kills, two digs and one ace.
Against Northport, Davenport's leading stat-getters were Rainwater (14 kills and six aces) and Selah Hupp (eight kills, seven digs and two aces).
Reardan was also swept by the visitors from Northport in Davenport Saturday.
The Reardan match was Davenport's first regular season match of the season, while Reardan got going against Almira-Coulee/Hartline Thursday, Sept. 7.
A young Screaming Eagle squad dropped the season opening match 22-25, 15-25, 23-25.
Reardan went toe-to-toe with ACH in the first set. Throughout, they held a slight lead until the Warriors knotted the score at 22. ACH ended the set on consecutive kills to take a 1-0 lead in the match.
ACH's front row attackers came alive in the second set. Their kill shots kept the Screaming Eagles on their heels. ACH built a 21-8 lead, but Reardan's defense stiffened, giving them a chance to score points. They closed the gap to 23-15 before falling 25-15.
In the final set, ACH jumped to a 14-6 lead before Reardan clawed back. Coupled with miscues by ACH and a kill shot by Reardan's Olivia Wicks, the Screaming Eagles drew within one point at 21-20. ACH ended the game with three straight kills. The 25-23 victory allowed them to win the match 3-0.
Freshman Kaylynn Clouse led Reardan with 14 assists. She also won points with five kills. Classmates Sprecher, Wicks, Tenice Waters and senior Taylor Yonemura had eight, four, three and three kills, respectively.
Wicks also showed strength at the net, blocking two ACH's shots.
Reardan assistant coach Mike Lyon was pleased with his team's effort.
"This was a good outing," he said. "We're super young. We just ended the game with six freshmen on the court. I liked a lot of what I saw tonight. We're just really green."
Reardan hosts Garfield-Palouse Thursday, Sept. 14, while Davenport doesn't play again until Tuesday, Sept. 19 at Liberty. Both matches begin at 6:30 p.m.
