Gorillas drop season opener

Moses Lake Christian pulls away

DAVENPORT - In a season where they're playing an independent, 8-man schedule with a combination of varsity and junior varsity games based on opponent availability, the Gorillas dropped their Homecoming opener to Moses Lake Christian Academy 32-22 Friday, Sept. 22.

The Lions of District 6 came in undefeated and improved to 4-0 with the road victory.

The game opened with an extended MLCA drive that got down to the Davenport goal line, but the Gorilla defense held tough to turn the Lions over on downs.

But then Davenport quarterback Brody Schillinger was sacked in the endzone, giving the visitors a rare 2-0 lead early on.

Both offenses struggled to crack the opposing defense until the second quarter, when MLCA quarterback Rubin Yulanchuk powered in a 23-yard run. Following the conversion, Davenport trailed 10-0.

Davenport appeared to have scored its first touchdown of the year on the following drive when Schillinger found Joel Odenrider for a catch-and-run score, but the play was negated by a holding penalty. On the next play, a bad snap was recovered by MLCA on its own 35-yard line.

Ulyanchuk scored his second touchdown of the game on the ensuing drive from six yards away and MLCA led 16-0.

Davenport cut the deficit in half just before intermission, finally cracking the MLCA defensive code with a long drive capped by a trick play where Schillinger pitched to Odenrider, who tossed back to Schillinger for a 13-yard score.

MCLA led 16-8 at halftime.

The Gorillas weren't finished yet, scoring 14 unanswered points on the third quarter on two touchdown runs by Brock Gustaveson to take their first lead of the game at 22-16 heading into the fourth quarter.

But the final 12 minutes belonged to the visitors. Levi North ran in a 1-yard score, then Ulyanchuk scampered around left end for a dagger 4-yard touchdown and conversion to make the score 32-22 with 2:58 left.

Davenport moved into the redzone on its final drive but turned the ball over on downs to effectively end the game.

The Gorillas will next play a varsity game on the road at Oroville Friday, Oct. 6. Kickoff is scheduled for 6 p.m.

And the next Gorilla home game is Friday, Oct. 3 against Pateros, also at 6 p.m.
