Gorillas sweep Kettle Falls

DAVENPORT - Needing a win after a heartbreaking 3-2 defeat at Liberty two days prior, the Gorilla volleyball team rebounded with a fairly comfortable 3-0 (25-14, 25-12, 25-12) win over Kettle Falls Thursday, Sept. 21.

Davenport improved its record to 2-2 with the easy victory.

The Gorillas jumped out to a quick 9-4 lead in the first set before pulling away for the 25-14 win.

Kettle Falls put up a much bigger fight to start the second set, taking a 7-3 lead that Davenport quickly erased with a 17-9 run.

Head coach Natalee Hayes attributed the set turnaround to a "mind reset."

"Focusing on how can we take a deep breath, go get this server and go get the kill and we're right back at the service line," Hayes said.

Davenport made it clear a sweep was on the horizon on the third set, building a 19-11 lead before ending the set on a 6-1 run to end the match.

Naomi Rainwater paced Davenport with 15 kills, while Selah Hupp notched 10 aces. Sister Tatum Hupp had 15 digs, while Clare Lathrop defended the net with 10 blocks.

"We talk a lot and we try to keep communicating (while) staying positive and not trying to play down to their level, because we've done that before and it's not been good," Lathrop said. "(We're) trying to stay on our level and being positive."

The Gorillas then traveled to Chewelah Tuesday, Sept. 26, where Davenport fell in four sets 21-25, 25-22, 20-25, 21-25 to fall to 2-3 this season.

Davenport next travels to Medical Lake for a 6:30 p.m. match Monday, Oct. 2.
