Davenport volleyball wins two straight

Gorillas top Medical Lake, UCA

MEDICAL LAKE - The Davenport volleyball team bounced back from a loss in Chewelah last Tuesday with back-to-back victories on back-to-back days over Medical Lake and Upper Columbia Academy Monday, Oct. 2 and Tuesday, Oct. 3.

Davenport topped Medical Lake in four sets and swept UCA.

The road match against the 1A Cardinals was a hotly contested affair. Davenport got off to a strong start, taking an 11-7 lead in the first set.

Medical Lake drew within one point four times in the set, but Davenport never allowed a tie, holding on to take the set 25-21.

The second set was even more competitive. Back and forth went the Cardinals and Gorillas before Medical Lake built a 19-14 lead. But Davenport went on an 8-2 run to take a 22-21 lead before eking out a 25-23 set victory.

The intensity was raised further in the third set. Medical Lake built an 18-14 lead, but Davenport cut that deficit to 19-18.

The third set went right down to the wire, and Medical Lake survived a 25-23 victory to cut Davenport's match lead to 2-1.

And the fourth and final set was just as competitive, but this time, it was Davenport carving out the 25-23 win to put the match away.

"Every game that we play has been within five points of each other, so stretching these with tight margins is really important for our girls to be able to battle through them," Davenport head coach Natalee Hayes said. "That's exactly what we're going to see in league these next few weeks."

Tuesday's home contest against UCA wasn't as close. Davenport easily rolled over the Lions, winning 25-17-25-18, 25-15.

Chloe Hammond had seven kills, while Koda Coffman notched 11 assists. Tatum Hupp and 17 digs, Selah Hupp had seven aces and Clare Lathrop tallied four blocks.

Davenport improved to a winning record at 4-3 with the two victories. The Gorillas visit Asotin at 6:30 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 5.
