Odessa thumped by Wellpinit

Running clock enacted for second week

WELLPINIT - A short-handed Tigers roster was no match for an undefeated Wellpinit team that marched the ball up and down the field against the visitors as Odessa dropped its second straight game 50-16 Friday, Sept. 29.

The loss, which was preceded by a 54-6 thumping against Wilbur-Creston the week prior, dropped the Tigers to 3-2 this season.

"In reality, the game was lost before we left the locker room because we had three important players hurt and the underclassmen that had to fill in were nervous," Odessa head coach Joe Schlomer said.

Wellpinit jumped out to a 14-0 lead in the first half. Odessa turned the ball over on downs on all three of its first quarter possessions but forced a Wellpinit fumble in the redzone to prevent further damage.

But the home team extended its lead to 28-0 by halftime on a 42-yard reception by Hayden McCrea and a 36-yard run by Andrew Moyer.

Odessa's best offensive drive came after turning Wellpinit over to begin the second half. Chad Strebeck turned a well-executed screen pass from Zane McMillan into a 36-yard catch-and-run score to cut the lead to 28-8.

The Tigers turned Wellpinit over on downs at the 30-yard line, but turned the ball back over and Moyer essentially put the game away with a 52-yard run up the middle to build Wellpinit's lead back to 36-8.

Moyer added another one-yard run and Jace Lavato secured a 15-yard receiving touchdown to bring Wellpinit's point total to 50. By 7:57 left in the game, the clock was running against Odessa for the second straight week.

Leo Martinez earned a late touchdown with a 13-yard run with 3:32 left to bring Odessa's total to 16.

"I take the blame for not having them prepared," Schlomer said. "We had a decent week of practice and we self-imploded."

The Tigers will look to bounce back in the final home game of the regular season against Inchelium at 7 p.m. Friday, Oct. 7. Homecoming and Senior Night festivities are planned.
