Solidays lead Gorillas in win

REARDAN - After losing by five goals at Davenport three weeks ago, the Screaming Eagles hosted the Gorillas in a rematch on their home turf Tuesday, Oct. 3. The results were nearly the same as Davenport walked off the pitch with a 6-1 win over their Northeast 2B rivals.

As in every game this season, Reardan had enough players to field a team, but no more. Davenport had the luxury of having seven substitutes sitting on its bench.

The Soliday girls accounted for five of the six Gorillas' goals. Sophomore Glenna and eighth grader Charlotte kept Reardan goalie Ally Burtenshaw on her toes from beginning to end.

Glenna Soliday scored the game's first goal when she rocketed a shot past Burtenshaw from the right side of the field. With 33:30 left in the first half Davenport led 1-0.

Ten minutes later, Reardan's Noelle Raczykowski fired a pass to Elise Cox, which Cox was able to sneak into the Gorilla net from close range to even the score at 1-1.

Midway through the first half, Davenport notched another goal when Glenna Soliday converted from five yards out on an assist from Charlotte Soliday.

Four minutes later, Glenna Soliday returned the favor when her assist gave Charlotte Soliday her first goal of the game.

At halftime Davenport led 3-1.

Glenna Soliday committed larceny two minutes into the second half when she stole the ball from her opponent, dribbled to the center of the field and fired a ball into the net from 20 yards out to make the score 4-1.

Seven minutes later, she found her sister in the center of the field for another score. Charlotte Soliday's goal put Davenport ahead 5-1.

Jensyn Jacobsen scored the Gorillas' last goal when she found the net from 20 yards out with 11:15 left in the game.

"This was not an easy game," Glenna Soliday said. "Our communication and passing wasn't great, and we weren't always in the right area. Our passing got better in the second half."

She reserved praise for Jacobsen's defensive play, which hindered Reardan's offensive attack.

"We came out a little slow in the first half," Davenport head coach Monty Soliday said. "Losing in a shootout to Northwest Christian on Saturday took a lot of energy, but we picked things up in the second half. Jensyn Jacobsen was all over the field tonight and Emma (Cormier) did a good job with the mark. There were sparks of other kids playing pretty well, too. Samantha (Stiles) showed up and we expect her to only get better."

The win improved Davenport's record to 6-1. The loss dropped Reardan to 2-5.

Davenport plays at home against Kettle Falls Thursday, Oct. 5 and Tonasket Saturday, Oct. 7.

Reardan plays at Upper Columbia Academy Thursday, Oct. 5 and at Colville Tuesday, Oct. 10.
